Giant-killer Karthik to challenge Balachander; Friends Prathima, Shilpa set-up another final

Bengaluru, 8 Dec 2018: Chennai’s34-year fifth seed Karthik K will be the new challenger to face the second seed Balachandra in the men’s singles final on Sunday in the third edition of the Tabebuia Open, the all-India AITA-ranking wheelchair tennis tournament  organised by Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour atthe KSLTA Stadium in Cubbon Park on Friday.

Karthik continued his winning run defeating another seed Mariappan while Balachander made it to the final for the third-year running beating Shivaprasad in the semis.

Top seeded Bengaluru pair, Prathima N Rao and Shilpa KP won the doubles crown beating statemates Ammu Mohan and Nalina Kumari. Prathima and Shilpa will face each other for the singles crown on Sunday.

Results: Women’s Doubles Final: Prathima N Rao / Shilpa KP (Seed 1) (Kar) bt Ammu Mohan / Nalina Kumari (3 ) (Kar) 6-0, 6-1.

Men’s Singles semifinals: K Karthik (5) (TN) bt D Mariappan (3) (TN) 6-3, 6-0; Balachander (2) (TN) bt Shivaprasad (4)(Kar) 6-3, 6-2.

Men’s Doubles semifinals: Shekar Veeraswamy (Kar) / Balachander Subramanian (TN) (1) bt Shivaprasad (Kar) / Madhusudhan (Kar) (3) 6-1, 6-2; D Mariappan (TN) / K Karthik (TN) (2)bt Anil D Almeida (Kar) / Sathasivam (TN) (4) 6-0, 6-1.
