Viren Rasquinha is my Hero! I have followed him for a decade and more. A gentleman to the core, on and off the field! He is now the guiding spirit behind the Olympic Gold Quest, a quest truly moving forward to bring many more laurels to the Country!
Here is a hockey coach all the sporting fraternity knows, loves and respects. A disciplinarian to the core, he teaches dedication and commitment, apart from the other nitty, gritty…
Better Late than Never! Congrats ‘Bawa’ for being finally honoured with the Dadoji Konddeo Puraskar from the Maharashtra Govt. for coaching excellence.
Merzban Patel, better known simply as ‘
Bawa’ to the entire Mumbai hockey fraternity, is perhaps the most dedicated grassroots hockey coach in the country. He is the main reason that Mumbai hockey is still surviving. I owe much of my success to this man who inspired me to dream and to work harder than I ever imagined was possible.
I remember one particular incident when I captained the Bombay Junior team to the finals of the Junior Nations in 1998-99 in Bangalore, Bawa was there in the stands, as usual, screaming and shouting and eating his handkerchief with the stress (All Mumbai hockey players will know this 😆)
Bawa runs the iconic 55-year-old Republicans Sports Club of which he has been almost single-handedly running the club for over 3 decades after taking over from the equally legendary BK Mohite. Republicans have produced about 5 Olympians – Gavin Ferreira (1996), Jude Menezes (2000), Adrian Dsouza and myself (2004) and Devindra Walmiki (2016). He has produced many internationals who have represented India, the latest being young goalkeeper Suraj Karkera.
Come rain or sunshine, 68-year-old Bawa is 365 days on the hockey pitch encouraging young kids to make something of their lives. In this era of negative news, I felt I must share some very positive news of a ‘Real Hero’. Thank you, Bawa, for all that you have done for Mumbai and Indian hockey 🙏🙏
